Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can you give me a quotation over the phone?
A: Yes there is no need for us to visit your home. Commercial property may require a site visit.
Q: What is the estimated drying time?
A: The cleaning will leave your carpets or upholstery moisture (not wet) and they will dry naturally during the course of the day.
Q: How quickly can I get my carpet or upholstery cleaned?
A: We will try to get you an appointment within 24hrs of contacting us.
Q: Are you insured?
A: Yes we have public liability cover.
Q: How many times a year should I have my carpets cleaned?
A: Cleaning frequency depends on a number of things such as the number of occupants in the household, pets, smokers and children. On average you should clean your carpets every six months.
Q: Can you remove wine, tea, coffee etc…
A: Some stains can be permanent and therefore we can’t make any promises that we can remove them. We usually get better results if we attempt to remove the stain before anyone else tries.

A:The deodoriser in our cleaning solution will deal with most pet odours. We use professional spotters specificity designed for the removal of urine.
Q: Can steam cleaning damage my carpet?

Q: What should I do about the furniture in the room?
A. Our cleaners will happily move any furniture that does not require more than one person. We would also kindly ask that you remove small objects and breakables before the cleaner arrives.
FAQ’s
Why do I get such a range of prices when ringing around for a quote?
There are many reasons. Only you the client can decide whether the reasons are genuine from asking questions and listening to the answers you get.
Some of the reasons may include:
•A cheap price is given over the phone and subsequently the quality of the work reflects the price: low!
•A small price is provided over the phone but various excuses are given to insist upon a higher price when the cleaner arrives. For example, stains and odour removal are charged as extra; the room is dirtier than expected; there is a cost for moving furniture; the price formerly provided will only be honoured if extra, expensive treatments are bought
•A low price is quoted because the cleaner has just started out in the industry and is trying to buy business. In these cases, the cleaner may also undercharge because they have little or no skill and knowledge of how to clean. In other words, the more greatly skilled and experienced carpet cleaners tend to charge more to reflect their competence, training and their investment in higher quality equipment
•There are several methods for cleaning carpets. Some are cheaper, easier and quicker to use but may only result in a ‘visually clean’ carpet on the surface as opposed to one which has undertaken a thorough ‘deep clean’
Charges from experienced and professional carpet cleaners will reflect all the factors which impact price, thus including the size of the carpets, the general level of soiling and any particular ‘fiddly’ marks that may be present.
How long will my carpets take to dry afterwards?
This is a difficult one to answer as the drying time will depend upon a number of variables, which include the following:
•The type of fibres
•The length of the fibres
•The amount of cleaning required for your carpets or upholstery
•The humidity of the air both inside and outside your property
When we come to clean we will be best able to advise you on what drying time to expect and will give you our professional tips on how to aid quicker drying.
Generally speaking, if you are using better-trained carpet cleaners with more sophisticated equipment the result will be that your carpets are dry within a few hours as opposed to a matter of days.
Could my carpet shrink?
Carpets that take a long time to dry are more likely to shrink. This may be the case when poor equipment has been used or because too much water has been involved in the cleaning process. Doctor Carpet is fully trained to identify the types of carpet which are more susceptible to shrinkage. Appropriate steps will be taken to ensure no shrinkage occurs.
How often should I have my carpets cleaned?
Carpet manufacturers recommend every 12 to 18 months, however this is dependent on which rooms are more frequently used. For example, living rooms, halls, stairs and landings tend to be more regularly walked upon than bedrooms so may require a more frequent clean.
Removing the soiling, which obviously can’t be done by simply vacuuming, will lengthen the life of a carpet. Don’t forget that the cost of cleaning a carpet is a fraction of the cost of replacing it.
Does cleaning a wool carpet shorten its life by stripping out the “oils”?
If a carpet is cleaned in the incorrect way it can indeed damage a carpet. However, the oil in question refers to Lanolin Oil which is normally present in wool – when on a sheep’s back! During the manufacturing process of carpets almost 100% of this oil is removed. You therefore need not worry about stripping a carpet of oils as the daily dust and dirt that become embedded in the fabric are more of a cause for concern. They are abrasive and can wear the pile away.
Imagine taking a piece of sandpaper and rubbing it against the pile of the carpet. You would never dream of doing this, yet when walking on a heavily soiled carpet you are grinding the dirt into the pile, achieving the same result.
You clean your clothes because you know they need a wash, not necessarily because they look dirty. You know that they will last longer, look nicer and remain fresh if washed regularly. The exact same principle applies to your carpets.
Does cleaning my carpet will mean it will get dirtier quicker afterwards?
Like so many ‘old wives’ tales’, there is an element of truth in this belief. It is indeed a fact that a carpet that is cleaned incorrectly can have the capacity to re-soil quickly. Cleaning agents which leave a sticky residue can cause this, as can do-it-yourself carpet cleaning machines. Cleaning agents bought in shops may also cause more rapid re-soiling.
Spotless Services uses professional solutions and machinery and has been successfully cleaning carpets for over twenty-five years. Carpets cleaned by us do not re-soil more quickly than could be expected from the level of traffic they experience.
Are wooden floors better for your health compared to a carpet?
No. In fact, the reverse is probably true. Carpets tend to trap the dust and dirt which become embedded in the pile. Dust and dirt that settles upon a hard surface will rise back up into the air very easily. All it takes is a door to open, the central heating to come on or steps taken across a room to create the air movement which will move these pollutants around. If they are in the air you will be breathing them in. If they are trapped in a carpet you will not inhale them.
In effect, your carpet is like a giant air filter. In a similar way to each other, if they get clogged up they won’t do their job properly. Although mopping a hard floor with a damp cloth is indeed cheaper than having your carpets cleaned, it would have to be done twice daily to achieve the same degree of air purity that our carpet cleaning provides.
In addition, carpets are cosier, enable rooms to be quieter and keep them warmer resulting in lower heating bills.
Please ask Spotless Services Staff for further advice if you have any particular queries or if you suffer from any breathing, allergy or respiratory problems.
My carpets are really, REALLY dirty. Can you clean them?
With over twenty-five years experience in cleaning carpets for satisfied clients which have included landlords, tenants and owners of shops and pubs, The must be doing something right!
Of course, carpets post-clean will at times still reflect age and usage. If The Spotless Services Staff believes that it is uneconomical to clean a carpet, we will tell you. There is no point in you wasting your money.
My carpet still looks dirty. Why is this?
When we clean, we do so thoroughly and systematically. Due to this, damage is sometimes exposed when we have completed the cleaning process as it is no longer hidden underneath layers of dirt. The same applies to instances where pile has been worn away. As such, it reflects less light and may therefore appear dull in comparison to the rest of the carpet. Another reason may be due to colour loss caused by wear or sunlight.
Will all the stains come out?
No guarantee can be made that any particular stain will be removed. Some stains permanently damage carpet fibres and no amount of cleaning will reverse this.
Factors that determine how successful the treatment of stains will be include:
•What the stain is
•The age of the stain
•The type, and construction of, the carpet
•The particular dyes in the colouring of the carpet
•How long ago the stain occurred
•What, if anything, the client has done to try and remove the stain themselves
•How hot the spillage/stain was when it initially happened
•Whether the carpet has undergone anti-staining protector treatment and how long ago
My carpet had an anti-staining treatment. Will the carpet cleaning affect it?
Protective treatments will wear off over time due to the effects of vacuuming the carpet, walking on it and general wear and tear. Having your carpets professionally cleaned is no different in this respect, so you need not worry.
If you wish us to re-apply anti-staining treatment after having had your carpets cleaned, or if your carpets are new and have not yet undertaken stain protection, we would be more than happy to treat them for you. Protector treatments should be applied on a regular basis in order to maintain a constant level of protection. Please do be aware that if you choose to have a protective treatment the carpet will take slightly longer to dry.
