Carpet Care
Carpet Care Experts
There are certain ways in which you can help prevent your carpets from getting dirty quickly. Ensure you vacuum carpets regularly and even more frequently in the areas of the house that are most commonly used, such as halls, stairs and living rooms. Generally speaking, upright vacuums with a ‘beater’ bar are most efficient. Always bear in mind that the most effective part of vacuuming is done on the pull-back. Don’t forget to empty the vacuum cleaner regularly, before it gets too full, to ensure that the vacuum can do its job properly. In addition, you may wish to invest in good quality doormats or barrier mats and a shoe scraper for just outside your exterior doors.
Carpet Care – principles for dealing with spots and stains
If you are willing to tackle the problem yourself, please consult the basic stain removal guidelines outlined below for our professional advice. These instructions are likely to prevent any long-term damage to your carpet, although it is important to acknowledge that they cannot guarantee a complete removal of the stain. These techniques are more likely to ensure that the stain is not ‘locked in’, which would make it more difficult for Spotless Services to remove.
Firstly, try not to panic! Don’t delay in dealing with the stain. Follow the instructions we provide as best you can and be methodical. Ensure you have the necessary products stocked in your cupboard so that you are always prepared for the eventuality.
The following items should be in your emergency stain treatment kit:
•Clean, white cloth or towel
•Surgical spirit, dry cleaning fluid, detergent solution, white vinegar solution (1 part vinegar, 4 parts water) and ammonia solution
General Tips
•Deal with stains as quickly as possible for an increased chance of success
•Avoid making the carpet sodden
•Do not use inappropriate detergents on carpets or upholstery, i.e. washing up liquid, wash powders, household bleach or disinfectants
•Always test any solution or detergent on an inconspicuous area of carpet prior to treating a stain
•Use detergents at the recommended dilution ratios
•Always apply the cleaning fluid to the absorbent spotting material, not directly onto the carpet or fabric
•Scrape up, or blot, any excess prior to treatment
•Make sure you always blot. Never rub or scrub as this may damage the pile
•Always work from the outside of the stain inward to avoid spreading
•Keep the carpet or fabric as dry as possible (use a hairdryer on a mild-heat setting if you wish to encourage quicker drying)
For liquid spills:
1.Blot up surplus spillage
2.Use vinegar solution, a little at a time
3.Frequently blot with dry cloths
For ‘chunky’ spills, eg. chocolate, blood, glue, egg, ice cream, etc.:
1.Scrape up the excess with a blunt knife
2.Use a detergent solution, starting at the outer edge
3.Blot dry
4.Follow up with ammonia solution
5.Blot dry again
For ‘solids’, eg. tar, chewing gum, ointments, etc.:
1.Scrape up the excess with a blunt knife
2.Use a dry cleaning solution followed by vinegar solution
3.Blot dry
For unknown stains:
1.Scrape up, or blot, surplus spillage
2.Use a dry cleaning solution followed by lukewarm water
3.Blot dry
4.If further treatment is needed, use either detergent or vinegar solution
5.Blot dry again
After having completed whichever procedure applies to you, rinse the stain thoroughly using the following method:
1.Mix one part white vinegar and four parts water
2.Pour mixture into a spray bottle and spray over the stained area
3.Blot the dampened area (ensuring not to rub) to remove excess moisture
4.Spread white kitchen towel (stacked 6-8 sheets deep) or absorbent cloth over the affected area and place a weight, such as a telephone directory, on top
5.Leave overnight and repeat if necessary
